How to get to Punta Arenas

The short answer
Almost everyone arrives by air: the airport of Punta Arenas, PUQ, is the only one in the region with an international service, and almost every itinerary connects in Santiago, which is about 3 hours 20 minutes away. The alternative is the 247 km road from Puerto Natales, about 3 hours 30 minutes by bus along the shore of the Strait. There is no train and no direct flight between the two cities, and the ferry across the Strait is a seasonal passenger service for the crossing, not a link between them.
By air: the airport of Punta Arenas, PUQ
The airport of Punta Arenas, code PUQ, is the only airport in the region with an international service. That single fact shapes almost every itinerary in Patagonia austral, because it makes this city the arrival point for the whole region and Puerto Natales the town you drive to afterwards.
From Santiago the flight takes about 3 hours 20 minutes. The practical point to plan around is the connection: almost every international itinerary into the region connects in Santiago, so a long-haul arrival plus a domestic hop is one ticket rather than two separate bookings, and the connection is protected. If you are arriving from outside South America, treat Santiago as the gateway rather than an optional stop.
Frequencies rise in the high season, from November to March, which is also when the boat tours run and when the light is longest. In the shoulder season the schedule is thinner, and the flights that exist are the ones that the cargo and the local traffic need.
One practical tip: build the first day of your trip around the arrival, not against it. The town is small, the airport is close to the centre, and the tours start early — the fort trip leaves in the morning and the 12-hour navigation leaves at the start of the day. Landing late and booking a tour for the same afternoon is the most common way to lose a day in this region.
Flight time from Santiago: about 3 hours 20 minutes (LATAM schedule and Dirección Meteorológica de Chile, checked 2026-10-28). Fares and frequencies change, so check them with the airline rather than with us.
By land: the 247 km road from Puerto Natales
The two cities are 247 km apart, connected by Route 9, which runs along the northern shore of the Strait. The scheduled bus takes about 3 hours 30 minutes. The road passes Fuerte Bulnes, Puerto del Hambre and Cape Froward: the same landmarks the boat tours pass at a distance, from the other side of the water (SHOA and the Route 9 corridor, checked 2026-10-28).
That is the whole appeal of the road. A bus ride here is not dead time between two cities; it is a slow, cheap, land-level view of the same coast the boats cross. The same day you arrive in Puerto Natales for Torres del Paine, you are already seeing the Strait.
There is a ferry across the Strait at the Primera Angostura, and it is worth being precise about what it is. It crosses the Strait itself, and the crossing takes about 40 minutes. It is a seasonal passenger service for the crossing, and it was designed to shorten the maritime route for ships rather than to move people between the two cities. It is not a shortcut between Punta Arenas and Puerto Natales, and it should not be planned as one (checked 2026-10-28).
Distance: 247 km. Bus time: about 3 hours 30 minutes. Ferry crossing at the Primera Angostura: about 40 minutes, seasonal (checked 2026-10-28).
By cruise ship: the port is in the middle of the city
The port of Punta Arenas sits in the centre of town, which is one of the reasons cruise lines call here: you can walk off the ship and into the city without a transfer. That also means a cruise day in Punta Arenas is a day with a fixed start and a fixed end.
The shore excursions sold on board are a different product from the tours sold on land. The on-board ones include the entry fees for the places they visit, which the land tours generally do not, and they run on the ship's timetable: a late all-aboard is a hard stop, not a suggestion. If your ship has a short window, the on-board excursion is the one to take, because it is built to fit. If you are not on a cruise, the shore trips from the harbour are cheaper and they leave you free for the rest of the day (checked 2026-10-28).
A word of warning about the prices. The boat tours on this site are priced from the land operators' catalogs, checked on 2026-10-28, and they do not include the admission fees that a cruise passenger pays through the ship. Comparing a shore price with an on-board price without accounting for that is how people conclude that the shore trips are overpriced.
The warnings, before you book
The bus is cheaper, and it costs you a transfer
Travelling overland between Puerto Natales and Punta Arenas is cheaper than flying, and it takes about three and a half hours either way once the transfers are counted. The point to accept is the transfer itself: if you connect a bus arrival with a booked tour, the tour leaves in the morning and the bus arrives in the afternoon, so you have to spend a night in one city or the other. Plan the sequence, not just the ticket.
The ferry runs on a season, not a timetable
The Strait crossing at the Primera Angostura operates as a seasonal passenger service, and the season for it is the southern summer, from roughly November to March. Outside that window it does not run at all, and the connection it creates does not exist. If you were counting on it, check that it is operating for your dates before you build anything around it (checked 2026-10-28).
There is no train and no direct flight between the two cities
This is worth stating plainly because it comes up constantly. The two cities are connected by road and by the seasonal ferry crossing, and by nothing else: no rail line, and no flight that does not go back through Santiago. The nearest airport is the one at Punta Arenas, and the region has only that one (checked 2026-10-28).
Book the tour before you book the flight
The Strait navigation and the full-day Tierra del Fuego trip are weather-dependent and sell out in the high season, and the Base Torres trek from Puerto Natales sells out earlier than anything else in the region. If you are flying in on a specific morning, book the boat for the day after your arrival, not the same day.
The three routes, compared
| Route | Time | What to plan around |
|---|---|---|
| By air, from Santiago | About 3 h 20 min | Almost every international itinerary connects in Santiago. More frequencies from November to March. |
| By road, from Puerto Natales | 247 km, about 3 h 30 min by bus | Cheaper, but it adds a transfer. You cannot arrive and tour the same day. |
| Ferry crossing, Primera Angostura | About 40 min | A seasonal passenger service, roughly November to March. It crosses the Strait, not the gap between the two cities. |
| By cruise ship | Fixed by the ship's timetable | The port is in the city centre. On-board excursions include entry fees and run to the ship's schedule. |

What to do once you land
The airport is close to the centre, and the town is small enough that nothing here needs a taxi to reach. Walking from the plane to your hotel is a normal thing to do here, which is one of the reasons a lot of the accommodation in town is walkable from the arrival point.
Two things to sort on the ground rather than online. First, the tours: the fort trip leaves in the morning and the full navigation leaves at the start of the day, so a tour booked for the day you land means a very early start, and on the days the weather closes the harbour it means a cancelled day. Second, the money: there is an ATM on Plaza Benjamín Muñoz Gamero, and the port area has the banks and the fuel station for anyone picking up a car and driving the coast road.
If you have a flight the next morning, remember that the 12-hour navigation finishes late and the 15-hour Tierra del Fuego day finishes later than that. Neither belongs on the last day of the trip.
